Observatory Open House for the people of the Tohono O'odham  Nation A Success!

Kitt Peak National Observatory was honored to host an Open House for members of the Tohono O’odham Nation on September 13, 2008. We thank the members of the Nation for helping make this a successful and well-attended event. Our guests were interested, enthusiastic, and patient as we worked to accommodate the record turnout of more than 1,000 people. We appreciate the participation of Miss Tohono O’odham Nation Earleen Patricio, the Valenzuela And Company Band, the San Xavier Basket Dancers, the Indian Oasis Dance School, food and craft vendors from around the Nation, officers from the Nation’s Department of Public Safety, and EMT’s from Indian Health Services. We are grateful for assistance in the planning and support of the Open House from the Schuk Toak District Council, District Chairwoman Phyllis Juan, District Vice Chairwoman Denise Flores, and the Tohono O’odham Executive Office.

Held every few years, these events are a chance for members of the Tohono O'odham Nation to tour our mountain facilities, view the sun and the night sky through some of the telescopes we operate, meet our staff, and learn a bit about what we do as we support and operate telescopes for astronomical research and education. The Open House also gives our staff a chance to learn more about the Tohono O'odham and your culture. We thank The Runner, KOHN, and all eleven District Offices for their assistance advertising the event. We look forward to working with you again when planning the next Open House for the Nation.
