The Moon has intrigued people for thousands of years. It has been the subject of study and speculation; we have imagined the likeness of humanity in its surface features and sent humans to explore its surface. It has inspired scientists and poets, and both changes in the tides and changes in human behavior have been ascribed to its influence. Now the National Optical Astronomy Observatory offers you the chance to explore the Moon with our Lunar Adventure program. The program includes:

Stars and Music—featuring Silverwood Duo

6:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Kitt Peak National Observatory

Reservations at 318-8726

Cost is $10.00 or FREE for members with current membership card (see below).

Arrive in the picnic area at 6:45, spread out a picnic lunch if you like, and wait for the sun to go down. After watching sunset you will be entertained with an hour of music by Silverwood Duo, with flute and guitar. Hailed as a “highlight of the season” by Where Magazine of New York after their debut concert at Carnegie Hall, Renee Bond on flute and Paige Jackson on guitar have garnered acclaim at musical venues across the country. Both musicians have broad backgrounds in performance and teaching both here and abroad. They were called by the Desert Leaf one of Tucson’s “most beloved musical pairs.” When the music ends and the stars have come out, attend an hour-long star party. View celestial wonders through a variety of amateur telescopes courtesy of Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association. Plan to attend this delightful evening of stars and music.

Junior Astronomers—ages 6 to 8

4:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Kitt Peak National Observatory

Reservations at (520) 318-8726

Cost is $8.00 for junior astronomers. Adults are free. $5.00 for members with current ID card.

Young children are just as fascinated as everyone else is with objects in the sky. Unfortunately they have trouble staying up to observe the many celestial wonders in the night sky, so they can’t take advantage of our Nightly Observing Program. This program gives those junior astronomers a chance to observe solar system objects at a time that is more comfortable for them. In addition junior astronomers engage in hands-on activities designed to increase their understanding of the Sun and the Moon.

Let your junior astronomers explore their universe at Kitt Peak and still get a good night’s sleep.
